Effective Marketing Content

You may have heard the phrase "Content is King" referring to SEO. The same mantra applies to email marketing. A newsletter list of 1000 subscribers does you no good if only a few subscribers open and read the email. Below are a few tips to help you write effective content and increase your open rates. There are numerous FREE resources on the web offering more detailed guides to effective marketing writing including free tutorials at VerticalResponse and Constant Contact.

SUBJECT LINE
DON'T use a generic subject line such as "eSales411 Newsletter". This is boring and it doesn't exactly invite the reader to open the email and read it.

DO write a subject line that creates excitement such as "10 NEW FREE zen cart templates at eSales411!". This is much more inviting and will increase open rates.

CONTENT
When writing content keep these tips in mind:
  • INVOLVE YOUR CUSTOMERS: Effective content can be gleaned from listening to your current clients. What are the most frequently asked questions from your customers? When writing content, ask your clients their opinion of your new product or web site. By using feedback provided from your clients, they become emotionally invested in your business and in turn much more likely to support your business.
  • NEWSWORTHY CONTENT: Product launches and upcoming events are examples of newsworthy content.
  • CALL TO ACTION: Because the ultimate objective is to get readers to visit your web site yu must have a call to action. Buy Now, Read More, and Sign Up are all examples of call to action.
  • SENSE OF URGENCY: In addition to the Call to Action, it is best to have a sense of urgency. While Supplies Last, Limited Quantity, and Free Shipping to first 100 customers all create a sense of urgency.
  • VIRAL MARKETING:Be sure to include a "Forward to a Friend" link with every email. Your customers may know others who will be interested in your product or ideas.
